Android now checks who made an app

Since 30 September, certified Android phones in four countries install only apps from verified developers. Google plans to expand this worldwide in 2027.

Google has started its Android developer verification. Developers confirm who they are and register their apps, and Android checks this when an app is installed.

What changed

  • Since 30 September 2026 , apps must be registered by verified developers to be installed and updated on certified Android devices in Brazil, Indonesia, Singapore and Thailand
  • Google plans to expand the requirement worldwide in 2027
  • For apps from Google Play, installing stays the same for most people. Google says Play developers who completed its verification are already verified, and eligible Play apps are registered automatically
  • Apps that are not registered can still be installed with a new advanced flow or with ADB
